Volunteer Hero Jim Porowski, a retired school teacher, has volunteered at the Hāli’imaile Community Garden’s Goodwill Gardens since September, 2014. Every Thursday, he helps maintain the garden, from plot clearing and weeding to harvesting produce for delivery to partner agencies who take the food to the needy. Like the Hawaiian value of Laulima, Jim works with the volunteer team to keep the gardens beautiful and productive, asking nothing in return, and always with a joyful, upbeat attitude. From tending the herb garden, to tackling harder jobs like cane grass removal, Jim Porowski’s weekly efforts are much appreciated, and everyone at the Hāli’imaile Community Garden is happy to have him as a part of the volunteer ‘ohana.
