After losing her youngest son, Kekoa, in an accident in 1995, Frances Nelson turned to volunteering as a way to mend her heart and help others in need. Reaching out to others who have suffered similar losses, Frances established Heaven Sent, a support group for bereaved parents. For years bereaved parents and families across Maui have turned to Frances for support and encouragement. Through the organization, Frances initiated and organized events to honor loved ones, including a beautiful candlelight walk on the beach with the scattering of leis by canoe. The staff at Legacy of Life Hawaii are among the many people who have been touched by Frances’ compassion, which is why they nominated her for Maui Volunteer Heroes.
